NYTimes: Microsoft has been developing its own hand-held music and video player to challenge Apple Computer’s iPod and expects to have it in stores in time for the holiday season, entertainment industry executives briefed on the company’s plans said last night. Microsoft’s digital device would be equipped with at least one feature the iPod lacks: wireless Internet capability that would allow users to download music without being connected to a PC. Microsoft’s device, which is similar to an existing player that uses the company’s software, would also have a more advanced video screen, according to the executives, who did not want to be identified because they were not authorized to discuss the device.
Der Marketing-Hammer laut Medienkonvergenz: Einen besonderen Coup hat Microsoft vor, um die zahlreichen iTunes/iPod-Nutzer für sich zu gewinnen: Wer iTunes nutzt und darüber bereits Musikstücke gekauft hat, bekommt die gleichen Musikstücke im Microsoft-Universum zur Begrüssung geschenkt! Da der durchschnittliche iTunes-Nutzer nur ca. 20 gekaufte Stücke besitzt, kann sich das Microsoft mit seinen tiefen Taschen offenbar problemlos leisten
Vieles wird wohl vom Preis, der Handhabung, den Softwareschnittstellen, der Software itself (so wie iTunes) und dem Design abhängen.

iPod-Killer und Microsoft – ist das nicht schon ein Wiederspruch in sich? ;-)
Ist wirklich lächerlich, was die da wieder vorraus prophezeien. Naja, sollen die mal machen ;)
[...] Freue mich schon auf einen spannenden Wettbewerb, zumal Microsoft parallel ein Musikportal á la iTunes aufzieht und darüberhinaus jedem iTunes Kunden angeblich anbieten will, via iTunes erworbene Musikstücke im MS-Protal kostenlos beziehen zu dürfen. Wird auch Zeit, dass Apples überteuertes Plastikteil Feuer unter dem Hintern bekommt. Und iTunes for Windows ist mE ein ziemlich umständlich zu handhabendes Stück Softwareschrott, hat mir bisher nicht annähernd zugesagt. Geschmacksfrage, sicher. MS sollte es also nicht schwer haben, ein mindestens gleichwertiges Produkt zu iTunes hinzubekommen. [...]
